MS in Biotechnology

Introduction

At BRACU the degree of Master of Science in Biotechnology has been mainly designed for creating highly competent biotechnologists to serve in the R&D organizations, biotech-related industries and research institutes in both private and public sectors of the country. With this academic background the graduates will be able to pursue higher studies leading to PhD degree both at home and abroad or even start their own enterprises.

The “MS in Biotechnology” curriculum at BRACU is aimed to blend a balance between theory and practice. The curriculum at BRACU is comprised of a total of 36 credits. There are core theory courses and a wide variety of elective courses and a compulsory research project (thesis) on an indigenous biotech-related problem. The thesis is obligatory to acquaint a student with the process of how biotechnological research is carried out starting from the planning stage of the research project to its execution. This will not only give an in-depth understanding of the research topic but also hands-on experience of conducting a research study.

BRACU has active collaboration with the University of Dhaka in terms of faculty exchange and postgraduate research and other organization like, ICDDR’B, BIRDEM, and BRAC Agriculture Research and Development Centre with excellent research and training facilities for research and project work.

Admission Requirements

  • Applicants should have a B.Sc (Honours) degree in Biotechnology/Biochemistry/ Microbiology/ Botany/ Zoology/ Fisheries/ Agriculture/ any relevant subject or an MBBS degree with a GPA of at least 2.5/second class at every level of education.
  •  Candidates with 3rd Division/Class are not eligible to apply.

 The candidates will have to pass an admission test. The successful candidates will be selected through an interview.


Admission Test
  • All candidates are required to appear in the Admission Test.
  • All BRACU graduates having a CGPA 3.00 or above are exempted from the written admission test.*
Fields for Exemption from Test**:

Applicants of MS BIO will get exemption from the English Composition part of the written test if they have the following TOEFL/IELTS scores : (Note that the applicants must appear in the program-wise sections of the written test)

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL):
550 (Paper -based test) or 213 (Computer-based test) or 80 (Internet based test - iBT)
or
International English Language Testing System (IELTS):
Overall band score of 6.5, with sub scores of 6.0 each

[TOEFL/IELTS scores are considered valid for 2 (two) years after the test date]
